Over the last two decades, EDCTP through its comprehensive Fellowship programme has invested in individual African researchers at different stages of their career trajectory. EDCTP fellowships are part of the broader EDCTP funding strategy to support the enabling clinical research environment and aims to develop the next generation of African scientific leadership.

Fostering networking among EDCTP Fellows

Michelle Nderu, EDCTP Project Officer responsible for the EDCTP-UK DHSC Female PhD Fellowship Initiative

" I am proud to witness the continued impact of our alumni in advancing global health research. The updated platform not only fosters a community of collaboration and knowledge-sharing but also serves as a testament to the transformative power of connecting dedicated professionals who are driving positive change in science, healthcare and innovation globally.”

We encourage all EDCTP Fellows to use the platform, to interact with other EDCTP Fellows and with EDCTP so that together we can continue to develop, foster and promote African research leaders, putting them at the forefront of global health research.

The EDCTP Alumni Network platform has recently been through a redesign process to enhance the platform’s visual appearance and to improve its user experience.

A pilot version of the platform was presented at the EDCTP Fellows Meeting on 7 November 2023, where Fellows were introduced to its new functionality and were able to provide feedback. The platform has a redesigned public interface that includes a more intuitive interactive map where visitors can identify fellows based on geographic or disease area criteria. Additionally, it provides a greater scope for fellows to update professional and research information. For example, it is now easier for fellows to add information on new grants received or articles published using an ORCID ID integration.

In addition to showcasing the EDCTP Fellowship programme, the EDCTP Alumni Network platform aims to facilitate engagement of current and former EDCTP Fellows. For this purpose, new interactive functionalities were implemented in the platform to allow fellows to keep track of each other career milestones. The members have access to discussion forums to interact with other Fellows on similar topics of interests.

A new face for the EDCTP Alumni Network platform

The impact of the EDCTP Fellowship programme has been significant, demonstrated by the Fellows's contribution to health research, their career advancement, the leadership of internationally competitive research groups based in sub-Saharan institutions, as well as the grants and awards received. Their ability to respond effectively during public health crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and Ebola outbreaks, further underscores the programme’s success.

EDCTP established its Alumni Network in 2017, aimed at providing a virtual space to facilitate networking and collaboration among current and former EDCTP fellows and the extended research community. This Alumni Network is anchored by an interactive online platform which was launched in April 2018. The platform provides a profile of all EDCTP Fellows to increase their visibility and allows Fellows to update their career progress, publications of their research work and post news. Additionally, the Alumni Network platform provides a mechanism by which EDCTP can communicate with Fellows, share news about funding and training opportunities, track Fellows’ career progress and evaluate the impact of the Fellowship programme

Since the start of its first programme, EDCTP has invested €55.76M towards 412 fellows across sub-Saharan Africa, from early career preparatory fellowships to senior fellowships, supporting clinical research team building, mentorship and epidemic and biostatistic expertise.
