EDCTP has been on a journey over the past 20 years, growing and evolving over time. Established in 2003, EDCTP has been successfully supporting equitable European-African research collaborations focused on poverty-related diseases. Under the first programme (EDCTP1, 2003-2015), the main priorities were HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria. Under the second programme (EDCTP2, 2014-2024), the scope expanded to include diarrhoeal diseases, lower respiratory tract infections, neglected infectious diseases, as well as emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases of epidemic potential. The third programme, Global Health EDCTP3, was launched in 2022 with a budget of up to €1.6 billion.
Chapter 4 - the final chapter - we learn how some of the achievements of EDCTP over the years have contributed to improving public health in Africa and strengthened the capacity of African countries to conduct clinical research. It also presents Global Health EDCTP3, a bigger and more ambitious programme building on the successes of the EDCTP programmes.
Chapter 3 provides an overview of EDCTP-supported activities on epidemic preparedness, focusing on the ALERRT and PANDORA-ID-NET consortium.
This chapter provides an overview of EDCTP’s strategy to building clinical research capacity in Africa.
Chapter 4: Joining forces for better health
Chapter 3: Joining forces against emerging infectious diseases
Chapter 2: Collaboration and capacity development
This chapter brings together examples of EDCTP-supported clinical studies that have made contributions to improving public health in Africa.
As part of EDCTP's 20th anniversary celebrations, EDCTP has developed a series of videos to present the impact of the programme over the years. Click on the images to watch the videos

From the outset, EDCTP has had a strong commitment to capacity development. EDCTP has invested in 202 grants towards highly transformative capacity development initiatives. Through these initiatives, we are helping to develop an enabling environment for clinical research by strengthening national regulatory (including pharmacovigilance) and ethical review. Since 2003, EDCTP has supported 121 grants to enhance ethics and regulatory capacity in sub-Saharan Africa.
Building African scientific leadership has been central to EDCTP’s approach to capacity building, by supporting individual African researchers throughout their entire career trajectory. A set of graduate and post-doctoral fellowship opportunities was developed, from early career preparatory fellowships through to senior fellowships which support clinical research team building and mentorship. Under EDCTP1 and EDCTP2, we have awarded 262 fellowship grants, supported 151 fellows through Master’s training in epidemiology and biostatistics (in collaboration with Africa CDC), and supported 1,618 trainees from sub-Saharan Africa through EDCTP projects.
Chapter 1: Accelerating the development of medical interventions
The celebrations of our 20th anniversary continued during the Eleventh EDCTP Forum. The theme “Partnering for Global Health Research Innovation and Impact in Africa – Celebrating EDCTP: two decades and beyond” was well reflected in the Forum programme and we heard remarkable stories of EDCTP successes over the past 20 years, and exciting insights on prospective Global Health EDCTP3 activities.

The Eleventh EDCTP Forum
Partnerships are core to our work. Over the years, institutions in 72 countries, 44 in sub-Saharan Africa, 20 in Europe and 8 in countries from other continents, have been involved in highly collaborative EDCTP projects. Over the years, EDCTP has established valuable strategic partnerships with key public and private stakeholders over the past two decades that have proven to be essential partners in launching joint initiatives addressing research gaps of mutual interest.

The combined grants portfolio of the EDCTP1 and EDCTP2 programmes has a total value of €1.20 billion invested in 692 projects. Research and development through clinical trials and product-focused implementation research constitutes the majority (83%) of investments in our portfolio. Under the EDCTP2 programmes, 206 collaborative research grants and a total of 477 clinical studies have been supported, including 153 phase II and III trials and 86 diagnostics trials. Many of these studies are targeting at risk populations – such as pregnant women, infants, children and adolescents, and people with co-morbidities who are usually excluded from clinical trials. Supported studies have generated more than 2,000 peer-reviewed publications to date.
